Alfred Bakkom's Rites Sunday at St.Johns Church

Last rites for Alfred Amandus Bakkom, retired business man here, were held at St.Johns Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday with the Rev. Mr. David R. Vaaler and the Rev. Mr. E.J. Nasset of Decorah officiating. Mr. Bakkom laid in state at the church from 12 to 2 preceding the funeral, which was in charge of Bakke and Hanson. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

St.Johns Lutheran Church choir sang and pallbearers were Alfred Odegaard, Kenneth Hanson, Alton Odegaard, Gordon Gilbertson, Nate Hager, and Donald Todd. Honorary pallbearers were Alex Drogset, Ludvig, Larson, Earl Kelly, Osmund Quandahl, Chris Megorden, and Hjalmer Olson. Members of the Ruth circle of St. Johns of which Mrs. Bakkom is a member served at the church parlors after the funeral.

Mr. Bakkom moved to Waukon from his Paint Creek township farm in 1923 and for several years he was in the grocery business, operating the Bakkom Food Market until his retirement. He had been in poor health for some time and passed away May 14 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient at the Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse and at home.

Born May 8, 1890, he was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Church by the Rev. Mr. C.J. Gronlid. He was educated in the rural schools and Waukon Business College, and married to Agnes Hanson at Old East Paint Creek Church Oct 4, 1916 by the Rev. Mr. Gronlid. The first years of their marriage were spent at the farm home in Paint Creek township until they moved to Waukon in 1923.

A member of St. Johns Lutheran Church Mr. Bakkom was active in the Brotherhood and was a deacon for several years. He took an active part in the work of the church and was well known in the community. He enjoyed gardening and made the Bakkom place very attractive with plantings. The Bakkoms have also traveled widely in recent years.

Mr. Bakkom was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bakkom, Mrs. Solvo Kolsrud (Gunda) of Chicago, Mrs. Anna Jacobson and Mrs. Carl Gilbertson (Hilda) of Waukon, and several nieces and nephews.

Among those here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Nordstom of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Martin McCall, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Nordstrom, Mrs. Wayne Harlan, and Mrs. Wayne Gormley, all of Elmhurst, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Houg and family of Van Wert, Ohio, Mrs. and Mrs. Soren Raunholm of Sioux Falls, SD., Carl Houg, Mrs. Hector Bjerke, Helmer Nelson, Oscar Hunstad, Clifford Hunstad, Otto Houg all of Jasper, MN., Mr. and Mrs Norman Pederson, Starbuck, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Norman Enderson of Sargent, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Gabrielson of Belmond, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Odegaard of Mankato, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Nick Eiberg of Gays Mills, Wis., Dr. and Mrs. William Bakkom of Manchester and others.
