Roger Charles Johnson

Roger C. Johnson, 85, of Waukon died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Gary Catterson officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Roger Charles Johnson was born February 12, 1924 on his parents' farm in Paint Creek Township, rural Waukon, the son of Oscar and Selma (Wilke) Johnson. He attended Jefferson #8 rural country school. August 5, 1944 he married Norma June Berg at the First Baptist Parsonage in Waukon. Roger and Norma farmed together in Ludlow Township, where they had dairy cows, beef cows and hogs. He also worked at the Ludlow Creamery as a cheese maker and managed the County Home Farm for several years.

Roger was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre, dancing to the Toe Tappers, watching stock car races, playing softball, watching his children and grandchildren play softball, and spending time with his dog, Bucky. Roger's favorite times where spent with his family.

Survivors include his children, Gary (Mary) Johnson of Postville, Larry (Sharon) Johnson of Decorah, Wayne Johnson, Virgil (Kay) Johnson and Lori (Brian) McCarthy, all of Waukon; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dean (Delores) Johnson of Waukon, LaVern (Jeanette) Johnson of Postville, and Keith (Darlene) Johnson and DuWayne (Linda) Johnson, both of Elgin; two sisters, Norma Bloxham and Dorothy (Gary) Gress, both of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma, who died December 14, 2008; his step-father, Lester Neverman; two brothers, Marland "Bud" and Dale Johnson; and three sisters, Marnetta Snitker, Delores Berg and, in infancy, Helen Jean Johnson.

Honorary casketbearers are his granddaughters, Ashley Ahlstrom, Karen Cota, Molly Johnson, Amy Lenzendorf, Mandy McCarthy, Kimberly Ransom, Angie Scoville and Kris Stone. Casketbearers are his grandsons, Gary, Jr., Bobby, Chad, Jason, Jeremiah, Jeremy, Justin, Sam and Steve Johnson, and Jamie McCarthy.
