Rita Schuster
Rita (Cunningham) Schuster, 92, of Wheeling, IL, formerly of Cincinnati, OH, died February 4, 2009 at the Franciscan Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, IL. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7 at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel, Addolorata Villa, with Reverend James Gartland, SJ and Reverend James Michaletz, CSV officiating. Burial was at All Saints Cemetery.
Rita was born December 2, 1916 on her parents' farm in Hanover Township, rural Waukon, the daughter of Willard and Anna Marie (Healy) Cunningham. She attended Hanover No. 4 Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1935. She also attended Waukon Junior College.
Rita worked in Des Moines as a secretary at the State Capitol, where she met her husband-to-be, Paul A. Schuster, who was from Dubuque. They were married in Des Moines in 1942. Paul worked for the IRS and his work took him and his family to different cities in the United States, but he and Rita and their family spent most of his working years in Cincinnati, OH. When Paul retired, he and Rita moved to the Addolorata Villa Retirement Community in Wheeling, IL (a suburb of Chicago, IL) in 1995. Her beloved husband Paul died in 2000.
Rita was a member of the Catholic Church, and she enjoyed singing in her parish choir. She enjoyed living at the Villa and participating in the activities when she could with the caring and thoughtful staff. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her children.
Rita's survivors include her daughters, Elaine Schuster of Chicago, IL and Mary Ann (Douglas) Evanoff of Park Ridge, IL; her son, John (Patricia) Schuster of Kansas City, MO; her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Tammy) Schuster, David Schuster, and Rachel and Kathryn Evanoff; three great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Cunningham of Waukon; her nieces, Rachel Smith, Ann Fossum and Kay Johnson; and her nephews, Joe Cunningham and Dan Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Alice Cameron and Helen Cunningham; and three brothers, Earl, Leo and Thomas Cunningham.
Casketbearers were Jeff and David Schuster, Dick and Bob Schuster, Dan Cunningham and Virgil Johnson.
Her loving and happy way touched many during her lifetime. Rita will be remembered for her strong faith, love of her family and fellow man, and her wonderful sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
