Gilbert E. Meiners

Gilbert E. Meiners, 85, of Eitzen, MN passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 at his home.

Gilbert was born July 18, 1923 in Union City Township, Iowa, to Walter and Alice (Deters) Meiners. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II from 1943 to 1945 and was proud to have participated in the Freedom Honor Flight October 8, 2008 to Washington, D.C.

September 18, 1953 he married Dorothy Oakes and she preceded him in death March 16, 2007. Gilbert was self-employed in the sales of silos and farm equipment. He farmed for many years in Winnebago Township. Gilbert was involved in humanitarian missions to Central America. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, fixing electrical equipment, and spending time with his family. His greatest passion was to promote salvation through knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen, MN and the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post #191 of Caledonia, MN. Gilbert was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Meiners of Eagan, MN and Sara Meiners of La Crosse, WI; one son, Dana of Eitzen, MN; 10 grandchildren, Tiffany (Rick) Bauer, Dustin, Jennifer, Bryant, HaiLee, Dallas (fiancee Elizabeth), Levi, Mikala, Leah, and Mycajah; two great-grandsons, Dominick and Bentley; one brother-in-law, Oliver Emerson of Waukon; one sister-in-law, Doris (Darrell) Mason of Salem, OR; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jacqueline, December 12, 2003; one brother, Howard (Lorraine) Meiners; one sister, Emma Emerson; two brothers-in-law, Blair Oakes and Harold (Virginia) Oakes, Jr.; and one sister-in-law, Eleanor (Ervin) Buchheim.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen, MN. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph. D. and Rev. Debra A. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Caledonia American Legion Post 191.

Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, MN Tuesday, March 17 from 4-8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
