Robert Joseph Welch 1930-2009

Robert J. Welch, 79, of rural Lansing died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17 at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Robert Joseph Welch was born March 1, 1930 in Waukon, the son of Patrick and Clara (Wagner) Welch. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's at Lycurgus Catholic Church, where he remained a life-long member. Robert attended rural French Creek #3 elementary school and graduated from ICC High School in Lansing.

October 22, 1958 he married Margaret Elizabeth Bakewell at ICC Church in Lansing. They lived on their Century Farm near Lycurgus, where they managed a dairy herd and raised beef cattle and crops. After his retirement from farming, Bob worked as a butcher at Jet's Meat Processing and a bartender at the Vets Club, both in Waukon.

Robert was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, NFO, and St. Mary's Lycurgus Parish. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking, and making Tom & Jerry's on the holidays. He also liked dancing to big band music, following the Chicago Cubs, and was an accomplished welder and woodworker. Family was important to Bob, he and Margaret had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and his greatest joy was his 10 children and their families.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of Lansing; 10 children, Patty Valenti of Rockton, IL, Becky (Tom) Lentz of Protivin, Suzy (Rick) Leiran of Waukon, Capt. Connie Welch of San Antonio, TX, Jim Welch of Lansing, Jeff Welch of Cedar Falls, Janet (Mike) Adam of Decorah, Meg (Grant) Carlson of West Des Moines, Mike (Carrie) Welch of Waukon, and Randy (fiance' Ashley) Welch of Ossian; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Patricia.

Honorary casketbearers were Denis Welch, Dan Welsh, Joe Welsh, Ralph Welch, Cletus Rooney, Bernard Welsh, and Dennis and Ralph Reppe. Casketbearers were Tom Lentz, Rick Leiran, Mike Adam, Grant Carlson, Matt Valenti, and Patrick Lentz.
