Richard R. Riggle
Richard R. Riggle, of Grand Marais, Minn., passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth following a three year battle with cancer. He was 74.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Marais, Minn., on June 27, 2009.
He was born July 31, 1934, to Cecil and Mildred (Wehre) Riggle in New London, Conn. He grew up in Portsmouth, N.H. and LaPorte City. He graduated from LaPorte City High School, Iowa State Teachers College, San Jose State College and University of Oregon.
Richard was a lifelong learner, teacher, artist and builder. He taught in Charles City, San Jose, Calif., Eugene, Ore., and Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1996 as a Professor Emeritus of Teacher Education from Coe College after 25 years.
For many years he was a member of the International Society for Teacher Educators presenting papers in England, Germany, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Canada, Denmark and the U.S. He had a Fuibright Scholarship to Egypt in 1989. He was active in the National Council for Social Studies.
On June 9, 1957, Richard married Joyce Krambeer at the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville. They enjoyed 51 years together. Family came first for Richard. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He built the family cabin, in the woods, near Grand Marais, Minn., where he and Joyce lived from 1999 until August 2008 when they moved to Primrose Assisted Living in Duluth.
Richard was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Marais where he especially enjoyed "The Gathering" discussion group and contributed insightful essays to the church newsletter. He liked to research and write editorials for the newspaper and engage friends and family in thought provoking discussions. He had a wide range of interests including history, politics, philosophy, religion, geology, ecology, economics and the environment.
Richard loved nature especially rocks, fossils, birds and trees. He had a passion for woodworking, including turning bowls on a lathe, carving sculptures and creating furniture. He enjoyed collecting and listening to a wide range of music and playing the harmonica.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Alec. He is survived by his wife Joyce; children Reid (Sue) of DePere, Wis., Dirk (Daphne) of Duluth, Minn., and Thad (Kate) of Hibbing, Minn.; grandchildren, Hannah and Jonah, DePere, Wis., Adam and Paxton, Duluth, Minn., and Duncan and Lorelei, Hibbing, Minn.; brother, Paul (Nancy), San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-laws, Nancy (Ed) Engelhardt, Postville, and Rita (Donnie) Anderson, Postville; brother-in-law, Stanley Krambeer, Luana; and many nieces and nephews.
