Margaret M. Sweeney

Margaret M. Sweeney, 81, of Waukon died Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, January 19 at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Margaret Mary Sweeney was born April 7, 1927 in Makee Township, rural Waukon, the daughter of James Leonard and Mary Ellen (Howe) Sweeney. She attended Howard School, rural Waukon. Margaret and her brother, James, farmed together on the home farm in the Lycurgus area. In 1992 she built a new home on the farm.

Margaret was a housemother for area families when they had new babies, she took care of ninety-eight newborns and their families. She was a member of St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church and its ladies circles. Margaret took great pleasure in "living with the land". She chose to live life simply and saw the beauty in the world around her. Margaret enjoyed children, animals, nature, walking and hunting for squirrel, fox and raccoon. She loved living in the country and traveling, especially with Bill and Dorothy Buege.

Margaret enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook making homemade angel food cakes, bread and pies. She was a caretaker for her mother, father, brother and uncle Hughey when they were sick in their later years. For several years Margaret served as a grandparent for Mrs. Adam's first grade class at West Elementary School in Waukon.

Survivors include her special friend Dorothy Buege and a host of other friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James John Sweeney.

Honorary casketbearers were Stanley and Bradley Moose. Casketbearers were Joe Welsh, Joe Sweeney, Dave Einck, Dan and Derek Buege, Pat Liddiard and Dennis Troendle.
