Viola Hazel Ellingson 1913-2009

Viola Hazel Ellingson, 95, of Waukon died Monday, January 19, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Friends may call one hour before services Saturday, January 24 at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Hope of The World Nigerian Mission Fund.

Viola Hazel Blegen was born January 22, 1913 on her grandparents' farm, Gulbrand and Anna Blegen, in Glenwood Township Winneshiek County, the daughter of Helmer and Hannah (Onsager) Blegen. She was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1931. Viola worked at the Winneshiek County Home for three years.

January 16, 1936 she was married to Arnold William Ellingson at Glenwood Lutheran Church by her brother, Rev. Allen R. Blegen. Viola and Arnold farm together in Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties before moving into Waukon in 1975. She worked at the Northgate Care Center in Waukon.

Viola was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, where she was active in its ladies circles and taught Sunday school. In 1954 she became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in its ladies circles and also taught Sunday school. Viola volunteered at Makee Manor and St. Vincent De Paul's for several years.

Survivors include two sons, Hubert (Martha) Ellingson of Marion and Gordon (Louise) Ellingson of Waukon; seven grandchildren, Nancy Ellingson, Mark Ellingson, Russell (Annette) Ellingson, Dr. Todd (Rachel) Ellingson, Sarah Kircher, Cheryl (Dave) Fetketter and Laura (Dr. Mark) Smith; seven great-grandchildren, E.J. Runice, Brittney and Kimberly Ellingson, Liza Ellingson, Zachary Smith, and Mandy and Mic Kircher; three sisters-in-law, Bernice Byrnes of Postville, and Helen Bergan and Thelma Ellingson, both of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold, who died in 1981; and three brothers, Perdy, Merwyn and Rev. Allen Blegen.

Honorary casketbearers are her great-grandchildren. Casketbearers are her grandchildren.
