Thomas James Albert

Thomas James Albert, MD, age 83, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at his home in Mendocino, CA. Graveside services were held Saturday, December 27 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing, with Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating.

Tom was born in Lansing to William and Anita (Bakewell) Albert. He graduated from Lansing Public High School and Loras College in Dubuque. Tom served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Army of Occupation in Japan at the end of WWII.

Following the service, he graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1951 and interned at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu, HI. For the next four years he served as a medical doctor for an engineering firm testing the first hydrogen bomb on Eniwetok atoll in the Marshall Islands. He then spent a year in Paris, studying French and acquiring his love for that city which he visited twice a year.

He received a Masters degree in Public Health at the University of California, Berkley and was employed by the Orange County, CA Health Department for the remainder of his career. Upon retirement he moved to Mendocino, CA, where he loved his view of the ocean, pursuing his hobby of collecting books and art and a succession of cats. He often recalled his boyhood in Lansing with fond memories. Tom was truly one of a kind, a consummate story-teller and will be missed by his many friends and family.

Tom is survived by his brothers, Bill (Bea) of Olympia, WA and John (Veronica) of Ridgeley, WV; his sister, Mary (Bob) McGowan of Prairie Village, KS; and 16 nieces and nephews.
