William George Albert

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather William George (Bill) Albert, age 85, died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 in Olympia, WA. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1021 Boundary St. SE, Olympia, WA, Saturday, January 3 at 10:30 a.m. with burial immediately following at Calvary Cemetery on the 3800 block of Cleveland Ave SE in Olympia, WA.

Bill was born in Lansing to William and Anita (Bakewell) Albert. He graduated from Lansing Public High School and attended Loras College in Dubuque. Bill interrupted his education to serve as a Marine Corp dive bomber pilot during World War II. He flew many combat missions in the South Pacific and the Philippines, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous Air Medals. After the war he continued flying with the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Major after 20 years.

Following his discharge from active duty, Bill married Beatrice Pedretti from Genoa, WI. Bill and Bea moved to Ames, where Bill graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation Bill took a position with General Electric in Schenectady, NY.

In 1950, Bill moved his family to Richland, WA, where he started his career in the nuclear field. This career included positions at Hanford, Atomic Energy Commission in Chicago, IL, Battelle in Richland, WA, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in Walnut Creek, CA, Senior Resident Inspector for the NRC out of Olympia, WA, and with the International Atomic Energy Commission in the Philippines.

Bill loved photography, flying light aircraft, camping, and family gatherings. Like his brother, Thomas (Tom) J. Albert, who recently passed away, Bill had a fondness and always loved visiting his home town of Lansing. Bill's father and his grandfather had both been chiefs of the Iowa Fish and Game Department and this love of nature and the magic of the Mississippi River valley was instilled in him at an early age and he had great childhood adventures.

Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Beatrice (Bea) Albert of Olympia, WA; daughters Mary Lee (Barry) Bonfield of Downers Grove, IL and Cathy (Dave) Askren of Vancouver, WA; sons Tom (Lyubov) Albert of Richland, WA, Steve (Kim) Albert of Seattle, WA, Jim (Cece Clynch) Albert of Olympia, WA, John (Michelle) Albert of Olympia, WA, Dan (Libby) Albert of Kent, WA, and Dave (Kelly) Albert of Chehalis, WA; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Vicky) Albert of Ridgeley, WV; a sister, Mary (Bob) McGowan of Prairie Village, KS; and eight nieces and nephews.
