Rev. Lawrence Odegard
Rev. Lawrence R. Odegard, 82, of Waukon, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, died Friday, December 12, 2008 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 16 at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church in rural New Albin, with Rev. Paul Burgess officiating. Burial was in St. John's Wheatland Cemetery, rural New Albin.
Lawrence Raymond Odegard was born March 28, 1926 in Oakland, CA, the son of Gustav J. and Anna Marie (Larson) Odegard. He graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland, CA and graduated from San Francisco State College in 1948. He then attended Berkeley Baptist Divinity School, graduating with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1952.
April 25, 1947 he married Laura Whittenberg in Oakland, CA. Larry served several churches in California and Nevada while maintaining a dual career as a social worker. In 1970, he entered the University of Iowa's graduate school, receiving a master's degree in social work in 1972. Larry was recruited by the University of Dubuque, and served as an Associate Professor for the University of Dubuque, Loras College and Clarke College in there social work programs.
The University of Dubuque is Presbyterian affiliated; he switched denominations, serving as an interim or a guest supply pastor for several churches. Larry's final charge, after retiring from the University, was at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church and St. John's United Church of Christ, both in rural New Albin, whose pulpits he shared with his wife, Rev. Laura. He was a member of the Eitzen Lions Club. Larry enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking bread, singing, playing the trumpet, carpentry work and building model airplanes and trains.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rev. Laura of Waukon; his children, Mark Odegard of Waukon, Peter (Michelle) Odegard of Dubuque and their children, Jocelyn, Robyn and Martin; Andrew (Catherine) Odegard of Dubuque and their sons, Erik and Jacob; Kristina (Mark) Walleser of Lansing and their sons, Matthew and Joseph; Rebecca (Douglas) Odegard-Siegele of Marion and their children, Hannah, Adam, Wyatt and Christian; and Naomi (Gary) Yaddof of McGregor and their children, Emily, Michael, Isaac and Elizabeth; two great-grandchildren, Xander and Aspyn Marie; a brother, Kenneth (Dorothy) Odegard of Salem, MO; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, C.L. and John Odegard; and a sister, Kathryn R. Mattison.
Honorary casketbearers are Erik and Jacob Odegard. Casketbearers are Adam, Wyatt and Christian Siegele, Matthew and Joseph Walleser, Martin Odegard, and Michael and Isaac Yaddof.
