Lyle Block dies in fall inside tank

MANHATTAN, Kan. (UP) -A 25-year-old lowan, Lyle Block of Clear Lake, was killed Thursday when he lost his balance on a makeshift scaffold inside a water tank and fell some 60 feet. A companion was unhurt.
Investigating officers said Block was working with Oris Moen, also of Clear Lake, painting the inside of the large water tank at the west edge of Manhattan.
The two were using an aluminum ladder as a scaffold. The ladder bowed, Block lost his balance and fell to the bottom of the tank. He died instantly of a fractured skull, Riley County Coroner Philip Hostetter said.
Moen was able to stay on the scaffold but watched in horror as his companion fell to his death.
The men worked for the Water Tower Paint and Repair Co., of Clear Lake, which has a contract to do work here.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Wilcox Funeral Home in Clear Lake. The body was returned to Clear Lake Friday by the Dwyer Flying Service.
