Dan Whalen

Dan Whalen, age 79, of Eugene, OR died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at his home in Eugene, OR. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 8 at St. Mary's Church at Lycurgus on Highway 9 between Waukon and Lansing. His funeral was held October 30 at St. Mary's Church in Eugene, OR. Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Eugene.

Daniel was born August 21, 1929, the youngest child of William and Agnes Danaher Whalen. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School, Waukon, in 1947, and Loras College, Dubuque, in 1951. He married Marie "Geri" Metcalf at St. Patrick's Church in Dubuque July 4, 1955, and they settled in Austin, MN. They had four sons.

As a young man, Dan worked in clothing stores, among them Theis Clothing in Riceville, and Leuthold Bauer's in Austin, MN. He then traveled as a clothing representative for F. Brody and Son's. In 1976, after 19 years on the road for Brody's, he and Geri, along with their four boys, moved to Eugene, OR, having purchased a golf course, renaming it Fiddler's Green. True to his retail background, the store there was as much a clothing store as a golf shop.

Survivors include his four sons, Tim (Gail), Matthew, Alan (Patty) and Luke Whalen; five grandchildren, Meghan, Laura, Ryan, Madeleine, and Alyssa Whalen; siblings Emmett (Lee) Whalen of Elkader, Anna Mae Curtin and Delores McDowell, both of Waukon, and Jim (Bess) Whalen of Augusta, WI; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Gardner Whalen of Eugene, OR; sisters-in-law Bernadette Whalen of Waukon and Mary Ellen Zoll of Cedar Rapids; and brothers-in-law Wally (Gloria) Larson and Mark Mauss, all of Waukon.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife Geri, August 28, 2000; his parents, William and Agnes Danaher Whalen; his stepmother, Hazel Kelleher Zoll Whalen; his siblings, Donald, Patrick, Julia Whalen, Dorothy Whalen Davis, Mary Zoll Mauss, Myrtle Zoll Larson, Vivian Zoll and Jim Zoll; sisters-in-law Joyce Brooks Whalen and Ann Zoll; and brothers-in-law Robert Curtin, Howard Davis, Vernon McDowell, and Robert Meighan.

Family and friends were always important to Dan, and this brought him and his family home to Allamakee County often. His boys are grateful that he maintained his strong family connections, and made them their own as well.

Dan's sons would also like to acknowledge his niece, Carmen Davis Connor, for being with Dan and them during his last days. She guided them gently during his time in hospice and was an angel afterward. Ann Zoll of Portland, OR, (and a wonderful daughter of Hanover) is also extended appreciation for her years of friendship with their mom and dad, and for being with them during this time, reading the paper to Dan, sitting with him in the early morning, and cooking for everyone. The support of family and friends with their e-mails, calls, letters, and prayers during this part of his journey was also very helpful to Dan and his family and much appreciated.
