Roy Moore

Roy J. Moore, age 89, of Lansing died September 13, 2008 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 20 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Cemetery. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements.

Roy was born March 16, 1919 to Cornelius and Maude (Gallagher) Moore in New Albin. He attended Sand Cove School and served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and VFW Post #5603 for 62 years.

Roy served in the Navy during WWII as a member of the Armed Guard. He survived a German torpedo that sank his ship off the coast of Brazil. He also saw duty in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic. After discharge, he returned to New Albin and farmed with his father and his brother, James.

He married Burnice Meyer May 11, 1949; she preceded him in death in 1968. He then married Burnice's sister, Carol Meyer. Roy was an avid reader and very civil-minded. He served on the Allamakee County School Board and the Upper Iowa River Conservation Board.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Maude Moore; his first wife, Burnice (Meyer) Moore; his sister, Hazel (Moore) Hennessy; and his sister-in-law (wife of Leo), Thelma (Hennessy) Moore.

He is survived by his children, William (Laurie) Moore of Lansing, Teresa (Moore) Dorn of Glendale Heights, IL, Leland Moore of New Albin, Sara (Moore) Peterson of Bondurant, John Moore of Ames and Maria Moore of Hastings, MN; his brothers, Leo Moore of Monroe, WA and Jim (Virginia) Moore of New Albin; his foster son, William Wyninger of Lansing; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
