Thomas Joseph Monroe

Thomas J. Monroe, 91, of Waterville died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 9 at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Thomas Joseph Monroe was born December 4, 1916 in the Lycurgus area of rural Waukon. He was the son of Glen Byron and Catherine (Ward) Monroe. Tom was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church. He attended Howard Country School in Makee Township, rural Waukon, graduated from Waterville High School in 1934 and Waukon Junior College.

October 1, 1938 he married Rita Spinner in Savanna, IL. They lived in Chicago for two years, where Tom worked for Lambercht Dairy delivering dairy products. Tom and Rita began farming near Luana and later farmed near Waterville until 1987. They raised hogs, dairy and beef cows.

Tom was a member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church, Farm Bureau, National Farmers Organization and Allamakee DHIA. He was also an active supporter of the Waterville School System. Tom loved farming and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, JoAnn (Tom) Spear of Minburn, Karen Koza of Wakefield, RI, Carole Cole of Altadena, CA, Glenn (Charlotte) Monroe of Viroqua, WI, Lowell (Cindy) Monroe of Genoa, WI and Maureen Monroe of St. Louis Park, MN; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Hill of Hemet, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita, who died in 2002; a son-in-law, Tony Cole; four sisters, Mabel Faegre, Viola Samek, Florence Kaeser and LaVon Steffenson; two brothers, Lloyd and Leo Monroe; three half-brothers, Vernie, Henry and Bill Monroe; and two half-sisters, Glennis Graham and Edith Long.

Honorary casketbearers were Jack Faegre, Arlyn Fossum, Rudolph Hesla, Clem Larkin, Gene Samek, Ordell Sorenson, Thomas Spear, Chester, Mike and Howard Spinner, Herb Surom and Mike Monroe. Casketbearers were Michael and Timothy Spear, Nickalas, Justin and Shane Monroe, Mark Fredrickson, and Cory Tryggestad.
