[George Wilde Obituary 1836 - 1923]

George Wild was born near Gschwend, Germany, April 17, 1836, and passed to his eternal reward at his home in French Creek township Feb.20, 1923. Early in life he was bereft of the guidance and care of a mother, but with his natural perseverance continued in school until he finished the course. At about the same time he was one of a large class confirmed in the Lutheran church there. Upon growing to manhood and having relatives in America, Mr. Wild left the land of his birth to seek out and carve for himself a home where opportunities for advancement was greater, arriving in his country in the fall of 1862. On Sept. 4, 1866, he was united in mariage to Miss Christina K. Frank, fourteen children blessed this union, two dying in infancy and three later, namely, John Wild and Mrs. Louis Hirth and Mrs. Elizabeth Snow. Those remain[in]g besides the sorrowing and aged wife are: William, of Caledonia, Minn.; George, Ferryville Wis,; Fred, Portland, Oregon; Gustav, on the old homestead, and Edward nearby; Mrs. E. J. Sadler, English Bench; Mrs. C. J. Bergland, Bowman, N. D.; Mrs. Mary Fulks, Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Mrs. Clara Smerud, of New Albin. He is also survived by 56 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and an aged brother, Mr. Gottfried Wild.

On Sept. 4, 1916, this pioneer couple celebrated their golden wedding, the large company present and the community in general hoping for a continuance of many more happy years of wedded life for them, which was granted them until Feb. 20, 1923 when the spirit of a most devoted husband and father returned to God who gave it.

Mr. Wild was a member of the German M. E. church on French Creek Ridge where, while health permitted, he might be found in his pew a regular attendant. His life was an open book, his religion that of a sincere Christian and no greater pleasure was his than to entertain and converse with the ministers of the gospel. Three weeks ago he was taken ill and because of his advanced age his recovery from the first was doubtful, lingering until the close of a beautiful winter day, Feb. 20, being tenderly cared for during his illness at the old home by his devoted children.

The funeral services were held at 1:30 p. m. Thursday afternoon, Feb. 22nd„ conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. H. Kohler, the Mt. Hope choir, who have known Grampa Wilde from childhood up, singing several of his favorite hymns, interact in the cemetery nearby.
