Clarence P. "Buster" Sweat

Clarence P. "Buster" Sweat, age 87, of Maquoketa and formerly of Lansing died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa. Funeral Services were held Thursday, July 31 at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing with Pastor Laura Odegard officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing, where military rites were accorded by the VFW and the American Legion.

Buster was born in Allamakee County March 1, 1921 to Elmer and Elizabeth (Boltz) Sweat. Buster graduated from Lansing High in 1938. He taught at French Creek School until entering the Army in 1942. Following the military he worked road construction for Holland Brothers of Decorah until 1970, when he bought his farm at Churchtown and raised Black Angus Cattle. Buster had two bulldozers and did custom work until the mid 1990s. He retired from farming in 2005. He enjoyed dancing and going fishing.

Buster is survived by one daughter, Connie Birkicht of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Christopher (Wendy) Donner of Vergennes, VT, Hilary (Eric) Schmidt of Lisbon, and Jennifer Blue of Troy, NY; five great grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Lucas Schmidt of Lisbon, and Reilley and Jordan Blue of Troy, NY; and one sister, Lorraine "Sis" Hirth of Churchtown.

Buster was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Elizabeth (Boltz) Sweat; a daughter, Janet Hjulian; a brother and sister-in-law, Levi and Esther Sweat; and a brother-in-law, Herb Hirth. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
