Reva LaVonne Martin
Reva L. Martin, 88, of Waukon died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Reva LaVonne Ames Martin was born January 1, 1920 in Clayton County, near McGregor to Floyd R. Ames and Laura (Roderick) Ames. She attended various country schools, most notably the Little Red School near Forest Mills, where three generations of her family had attended. September 26, 1940 she married Ralph Joseph Martin in Dubuque. They moved to Waukon in 1945 and she has lived there ever since. Reva was a homemaker and mother for most of her life, but she also worked in the laundry department of Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon for 13 years and did some housekeeping for local families.
Reva was a member of First Presbyterian Church and its ladies organizations. She loved to travel to the western states, raising flowers, listening to music, and reading, until her loss of eyesight no longer allowed. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many of her children's clothes when they were young. Some of her favorite times were looking forward to and attending family gatherings. Reva was loved by all who knew her. She will be remembered for many things, among them her quick wit, amazing memory and her beautiful snow white hair. She will be missed.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Adam of Waukon, and Rosalie and husband Darryl Brown of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Eric Adam, Lora Brown Howard, and Martin Brown and wife Kelly; great-grandchildren Jacob and Amanda Davis, Jordan Howard and Tyler, Collin, Alyssa and Kennedy Brown; and friend and sister-in-law, Vila Martin of Lansing, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, who died in 1998; an infant daughter, Colleen Reva; a son-in-law, Donice Adam; and a brother, Vernon Ames.
