James Broderick

Retired CW4 James L. Broderick (Sidekick IV), age 69, of Oakdale, MN died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis, MN after a two-year battle with cancer. Funeral service was held Monday, May 19, 2008 at Sandberg Funeral Home in North St. Paul, MN. Interment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Broderick was born November 2, 1938 in Waukon. He joined the Army Reserve in 1956 while in high school and served 10 years as an enlisted man as a combat engineer before graduating flight school with WORWAC 66-9. He served in Vietnam as a gun pilot with the 92nd AHC "SIDEKICKS" from October 1967-October 1968 and the Gulf War from January 1991-July 1991 as Brigade Safety Officer 1st Infantry Division. He retired in August of 1991.

His awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal W/ZZOLC, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Service Medal and Master Army Aviator. However, he was proudest of recognition for 24 years of accident-free flying, excellence in competition awards for rifle shooting and having flown with the Vice Presidential Flight Detachment stationed at Fort Snelling, MN.

Broderick served tours in Greenland, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Germany and finally Saudi Arabia and Iraq. He also counts seven rotations at Fort Irwin, CA. He was a Shriner and Knights Templer, a member of Enterprise Lodge 437 of Enterprise, KS.

He is survived by two sons, Lance and Sean; a daughter, Bridget; four grandchildren, Reagan, Jacob, Shawna and Michael; sisters Sheri Broderick Schoeller and Tanya Vasquez; brothers Danny Beckham, Robert Michael Broderick, Martin Broderick and Patrick Broderick; nieces and nephews; and closest friends, Mike Wlaschin and Pete Tacheny.
