Joan Marie Kruger was born September 12, 1928 in Waukon, the daughter of Albert and Charlotte (Snitker) Helming. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where she remained a lifelong member. Joan attended Ludlow #5 rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1946.
She married Benjamin Henry Kruger October 3, 1946 at the Zalmona Church. They farmed together in Ludlow and Union Prairie Townships for many years. Joan was a busy homemaker and mother, but also very active on the farm, especially with milking the cows, feeding the calves and tending to the yard and her large vegetable and flower gardens. They retired from the farm and moved to Waukon in 2005.
Joan was very active at Zalmona Church, where she was a member of the ladies groups, sang in the choir and served as church organist for many years. She was also a member of New Century Club. Music was an important part of her life. She started playing piano as a young girl and later took up the organ. She also loved to sing and enjoyed dancing. She was an excellent cook and baker, being particularly known for her pies and breads. Spending time with the dogs on the farm and traveling with Ben were other special pastimes of Joan's, but her favorite times were spent with her family and following their activities.
Survivors include her husband Benjamin of Waukon; three children, Wendy (Greg) Northcutt of Port Orchard, WA, Ken (Kristen) Kruger of Welton and Dave (Pam) Kruger of Waukon; and six grandchildren, Kyle and Kristen Halse, and Nick, Brittany, Stephanie and Jennifer Kruger. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, and an infant daughter.
Her grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.
