Shirley Ruth Sides was born November 19, 1930, in Champaign, Ill., the daughter of Warren A. and Goldie Josephine (Artman) Sides. She moved with her family for a brief time to California before they returned to La Porte City, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1948.
