Death of Miss Sophie Roese

Miss Sophie Roese, pioneer resident of Allamakee county, passed away Saturday afternoon in her Waukon home after an illness of several months duration which became more serious and severe three weeks ago.

A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Roese, early settlers in this county, the deceased was born in Switzerland November 20, 1853 and came to America with her parents when a child. The family settled on a farm near Lansing where she grew to womanhood. When a young lady, she moved to Lansing where she remained until five years ago when she made her home in Waukon.

Miss Roese was known to have an exceptionally keen intelllect and brilliant mind. She remained well informed on all affairs through much reading and even in her failing health and advance age, she remained well versed on current events of both the world and local community.

Being the last of the immediate family, she is only survived by a niece, Mrs. Lewis Jeglum of Fortuna, N. D., and a nephew, Bernard Roese of Paint Creek township. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and eight brothers.

The remains rested in Martins funeral home and funeral services were held there Tuesday morning with the Rev. Henry Marks of Lansing officiating. Burial was in the family vault on the homestead place between Waukon and Lansing. Pall bearers were Fred Zimmerman, Frank Bechtel, Phillip Marti, Leslie Kerndt, Ben Marti and Charles Schellhammer.
