Death of Mrs. Sam Decker
Funeral sevices were held Saturday afternoon at the Congregational Church in Churchtown for Mrs. Sam Decker, beloved resident of that place, who passed away at her home there last Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, following a long illness.
She was born Anna Bechtel, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bechtel, October 6th, 1882, at the old homestead in Center township. She was educated in the rural schools of the community and on October 24, 1900, was married to Samuel Decker of Church and their entire life was passed in that vicinity. No children were born to this union, and besides her sorrowful husband, she is survived by two brothers, Rev. Phil Bechtel, Sweet, S. D., and Jacob Bechtel, Carolial, Va.; six sisters, Mesdames Barbara Richert, Fresno, Calif.; Martha Johnson, Los Angeles; Katie Koerner, Dubuque; Elizabeth Greenwood, San Francisco, Calif; Dora Breuder, Ritzville, Wash.; Susan Revoir, Laurel, Mont. None were able to attend the funeral services except Mrs. Koerner of Dubuque.
Mrs. Decker was devoted to her home and church all her life and will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. One of her hobbies was the raising of canaries in which she took great pride.
The Rev. Henry C. Marks conducted the funeral services and said the prayers at the graveside. The large crowd of sorrowing friends in attendance at the services gave ample testimony of the high esteem in which she was held. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery and carrying her mortal remains to their last resting place were John Wendel, Leo Ferring, John Schellhammer, Julius Rissman, Ove Rood and Adolph Larson.
