George B. Olson, Allamakee county pioneer, died Sunday, April 27, at the Waukon Memorial hospital, following a month's illness.
He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peder Olson, early settlers in Center township, where he was born July 2, 1867, on the farm which had been his home for over sixty years. In his younger years he was known throughout the county as a veterinarian and stockman.
As a young man he homesteaded and worked on the construction of railroads in Wyoming, western Nebraska and the Black Hills.
His marriage to Inger Kaasa took place Nov. 8, 1888, at Heningford, Neb., and he and his young wife returned in a covered wagon to the farm in Center township.
Last November Mr. and Mrs. Olson had the privilege of celebrating their 63rd wedding anniversary at their home with their seven children, who survive with their mother. They are Percival W. Olson, Sparta, Wis., Mrs. W. A. Huffey, Caledonia, Minn., Mrs. Gunda Kolsrud, Waterville, Hjalmer B. Olson, on the home farm, Mrs. Henry Kvamme, Decorah, Evelyn Olson, Lansing, and Mrs. Fred D. Fiet, Waukon. There are 27 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Mary Jahnke, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. Rose Scherer, Berkeley, Calif., Mrs. Elizabeth Renswold, and Mrs. Ada Schwengle, New Port Richey, Florida.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the home at 1:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. from the Old East Paint Creek church of which Mr. Olson had been a long time member. Rev. E. O. Baalson will be in charge of the services with burial in the church cemetery.
