Obituary - William J. Barnes

William J. Barnes was born June 1, 1851 at Hereford, England, where he received his education and was affiliated with the Episcopal church there. At the age of 17 he went to sea, served as a sailor and later enlisted in the Life Guard of the Great Lakes where he served several years. In 1900 he came to Lansing where, in the next year he was married to Mrs. Jeannette Cole, who preceded him in death seven years ago.

Since 1935 he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. George Hartley of Postville, Iowa, where he passed away Nov. 13th after several months of failing health.

He leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Thomas of Wolverhampton, England, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday at 2 P.M. at the Lansing Federated church, conducted by Rev. J. C. Warton of Elgin, Iowa, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. L. C. Bartholomew. During the service George Aschom and Mrs. Art Greenley, with Miss Lois Ann Schafer at the organ, rendered the hymns “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Have Thine Own Way, Lord.” Rev. Warton also officiated at the graveside service in Oak Hill cemetery, where interment was made beside his wife. Casket bearers were Messrs. John Bjerke, Will Saam, D. A. Holmes, Carl Hurm, George Aschom and R. A. Dunlevy.

Rev. Warton was pastor of Lansing M. E. church for a year about 29 years ago. The Barnes folks were among his best parishioners, and he retained their close friendship all these years. He officiated at Mrs. B.’s funeral seven years ago; and in his sermon Friday paid fitting tribute to Mr. Barnes as a widely traveled Christian gentleman of the old school---not too often found today. He also brought a message of comfort to all Christians, whose faith in the Master makes their religion triumph over the trials and tribulations of this world.

Note: Jennette Cole was the daughter of John Rowe and Mary Dann Rowe. Grace Rowe Hartley was her great niece and lived with Jeannette and John Cole after her parents died. Mr. Barnes worked at the button factory in Lansing.
