Frances Hilleshiem

Frances Hilleshiem, 82, of Waukon died Monday, May 26, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29 at 2 p.m. at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, with Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Waterville Lutheran Cemetery, Waterville. Friends may call from 12-2 p.m. Thursday at the church before services.

Frances Hilleshiem was born August 9, 1925 in Water Valley, MS. She was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Smith) Van Winkle. She graduated from Camp Ground High School in Water Valley in 1943 and attended Draughons Business College in Jackson, MS. When her father died in 1944, she moved to Waterloo to live with her oldest sister.

February 2, 1946 Frances married Mervin William Hilleshiem in Waterloo. They lived in Waterloo until 1951 when they moved to Waterville. In addition to being a busy mother, Frances worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon for over 30 years.

She was a member of Waterville Lutheran Church and its ladies organizations as well as the Golden Girls card club and Waterville Sr. Citizens. Since 1944 she has also been a member of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls chapter of Rebecca Lodge. Frances enjoyed playing cards, music and square dancing, and playing games, especially Skip-bo, with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Bill (Jackie), Bob and Don Hilleshiem, all of Waterville; a daughter, Sherry Williams of St. Paul, MN; seven grandchildren, Jodi Hilleshiem, Robin Palmer, Heather Bente, Angela Glass, Amanda Howes, Alicia Ahrens and Ryan Hilleshiem; and six great-grandchildren, Ashley Hilleshiem, Adrianna and Avery Rocksvold, Grace and Jacob Glass, and Will Howes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Mervin, who died in 1998; three brothers, Thomas, Braden and Rip Van Winkle; four sisters, Irene Dehl, Nora "Mary" Cooper, Inez Van Winkle and Ruth Bartusch; and a granddaughter, Terri Hilleshiem Miller.

Casketbearers are Brent Miller, Josh Howes, Erik Glass, Matt Ahrens, Tony Rocksvold and Richard Bente. Honorary casketbearers are her grandchildren.
