Truman Edward Wurtzel was born on December 2, 1926 in the Dalby area of rural Waterville, IA. His parents were Herman Edward and Inga Louise (Pladsen) Wurtzel. Truman was baptized at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He attended rural Allamakee County Schools and graduated from Waukon High School.

On August 29, 1948 he married Donna Lou Hermanson at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Through most of his life, Truman was involved with farming and dairy. As a young boy he helped his father haul cream. Later, he delivered bottled milk for Andy Olson’s Dairy. Following his schooling, he worked several years on the farm for John Sivesind and spent a season in North Dakota working the wheat harvest. After marriage, he bought his first truck and began his own milk hauling business, Truman Wurtzel Bulk Milk Hauling, which he operated for many years, developing life-long friendships with many area dairymen. He also spent a number of years as a substitute bus driver for the Waukon Schools.

Truman enjoyed being around farming and looked forward to helping at his friends’ and families’ farms. For many years he raised and rode horses. He also enjoyed traveling with Donna, driving through many of the western states, and more recently going on bus tours across the country, including a memorable visit to Alaska. His family was very important to him and he closely followed all of the activities of his children and grandchildren and was starting to do the same for his great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he formerly served on the Board of Trustees.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Waukon; his 4 children, Carol (Boyd) Jeglum of Waterville, IA, and Steve (Geraldine) Wurtzel, Karen (Glenn) Grimstad and Rhonda (Bruce) Barr, all of Waukon; 14 grandchildren, Thea (Eric) McKee, Brian (Amy) Jeglum, Josh and Jamie Barr, Brianne (Dave) Eilers, Jennyanne (Michael) Hager, Corbett (Arica) and Suzanne Grimstad, Elisha (Rich) Marti, Nicole (Steve) Murray, Reid (Shannon), Mishey and Stevie Wurtzel and Nevada (Josh) Gowan; 2 step-grandchildren, Aimee and Megan Rude; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ramona Peterson and Norma Svendson, both of Waukon; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
