David Ernst

David A. Ernst, 52, of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at his home following an extended illness. Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, March 19 at St. Matthew Catholic Church and officiated by the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie; two daughters, Stacy Ernst and fiance Scott Kadera of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah Ernst of Fayetteville, AR; a brother, Eric Ernst of Coon Rapids; a sister, Vecca Ernst of Farmington; his parents, Allen and June Ernst of Center Point; and his mother-in-law, Joan (Fahey) Heffern of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald J. Heffern, who, along with his wife, Joan, were formerly from the Harpers Ferry area.

David was born April 14, 1955 in San Pedro, CA, the son of Allen and June Kinney Ernst. He graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. He attended Iowa State University with a ROTC scholarship. Then he attended Coe College, where he graduated in 1978.

He married Debbie Heffern August 5, 1977 in Cedar Rapids. David worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier and a mail handler. David also was a school teacher in West Union, and head girls track coach at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. He also was an assistant football coach at three area high schools.

David enjoyed the opportunity to learn different goals in his life. He loved spending time with his family, and with his one niece and seven nephews.
