MRS. R.I. STEELE DIED ON SUNDAY,RITES ARE TODAY

"Mrs. R.I. Steele, who had been a nursing home patient for about a week, died Sunday.

Her funeral was to be held at Martin's Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Mr. William Tjaden officiating. Burial was here.

Katherine Elizabeth Montgomery was born Sept. 11, 1870, near Kirkland, Ill., in DeKalb County, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Montgomery.

When a small child, she with two older sisters and two younger brothers, moved with their parents to Prairie du Chien, Wis., making the trip in a covered wagon. Mrs. Steele could recall many interesting things that occurred on the way.

The family came to Waukon in the fall of 1880. When about 18 years of age she united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was received by the Rev. Mr. Bergan. then pastor.

She took an active part in church work many years. She also was an active member of several others, Pythian Sisters, Royal Neighbors, and the Rebekahs.

She obtained her education in the Waukon Schools, first in the old schoolhouse, then in the school built in 1885.

Most of her life was spent in the parental home until January 15 1896, when she married Robert I. Steele of Waukon. Iowa. They had no children, but cared for many of her family.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Montgomery, four brothers, two sisters, and two half-sisters. Her husband, Robert I, Steele, passed away on February 20, 1945.

Remaining are one niece, Mrs. Ingram Benson, of Glenwood, Minnesota; and six nephews, Russell Larson, Spokane, Wash.; Morris Larson, Oregon; Leslie Teeple, Independence; Jerome Montgomery, and John and Price Montgomery of St. Paul, Minn.; also nine nieces and ten nephews on her husband's side.

Funeral services for Mrs. Katherine Elizabeth Steele were Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Martin Bros. Funeral Home to the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Tjaden officiated and burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs Steele died Sunday after a period of ill health. She was born Sept. 11, 1870 in Dekalb County, Ill., a daughter of John C. and Mary Journey Montgomery. She was educated in the local schools and before moving to Allamakee in 1880, she lived in Prairie Du Chien, Wis. She married at Waukon on January 15, 1896 to Robert J. (or I.) Steele who has preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Pythian Sisters, the Royal Neighbors and the Rebecca Lodges. Pall bearers were John Palmer, Valerie Dundee, Elmer Fogt, Peter Pratt, Cullen Henderson and Robert Dunning.
