John Taylor Steele Passes Away

Though known to be in feeble health months past, the sudden death of John Taylor Steele at his home in this city Thursday evening was a shock to his family and friends.

He was listening to his wife reading when with scarcely a tremor he quietly passed into the Great Beyond. Heart trouble, with which he had been afflicted for some time, was the cause of his demise.

Deceased was born in East Fallowfield, Penn., Oct. 10, 1846, he being in his 80th year. In 1865 he came with his parents to this county, they being numbered among its early residents.

On Dec 25, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Crow at Rossville, and the home in which he died had been their home for over 50 years. To this union were born two boys and three girls, namely Wilbur T. of Chicago; Meryle of San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Meta Shook and Mrs. Effie Worth of Waterloo; and Mrs. Doris Hintz of Chamberlain, S.D., who with his devoted wife mourn the loss of a fine husband and father.

He is also survived by three brothers, two sisters, and five grandchildren who will sadly miss him. Mr. Steele was a stonemason and plasterer, and worked at his trade until failing health compelled him to lay aside his trowel.

On Christmas Day 1923, Mr. and Mrs. Steele were permitted the honor of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

Funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Krebs, with burial in Oakland Cemetery. The Odd Fellows fraternity, of which he had been an honored member since 1895, attended in a body and had charge of the services at the grave.

*Note* John Taylor Steele was the son of David B. Steele and Elizabeth Ralston Steele.
