Eldred ("Hank") Victor Fred Nuehring was born December 9, 1914 to Edward and Hulda (Busacker) Nuehring in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville. He was baptized January 31, 1915 by the Reverend E. Schmidt and confirmed August 11, 1929 by the Reverend E. T. Finck, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Eldred lived with his grandparents in Postville and attended the Postville Public School until he was ten years old and in the fifth grade. He finished his schooling at the Grand Meadow Township School #4.

Eldred worked on the Stock family farm near Waukon, and the Fred Miene John Deere Implement Shop in Monona from 1948 to 1955. He was married to Darlene Irene Martins October 18, 1953 by the Reverend L. W. Reuther at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. They were the parents of a daughter, Joyce Ann Della.

Eldred enjoyed his work as a mechanic, repairing tractors and various pieces of farm machinery. He liked to take things apart to see how they worked and put them back together, hoping there wouldn't be any extra pieces left over. He also fixed small items such as appliances.

Eldred and Darlene farmed in the Luana, Castalia and Gunder area. They moved to Postville and lived in a house on Lawler Street and then moved to their present home on Cheryl Street. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in Postville January 11, 2008.

Eldred is survived by his wife, Darlene; a daughter, Joyce Ann Della Nuehring and husband, Changhe "River" Ren, of Overland Park, KS; a sister, Ellen Thoma of Postville; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Nuehring of Postville; a brother-in-law, Robert DeMarr of Bradenton, FL; nieces and nephews Eugene Nuehring, Ron (Elane) Nuehring, David (Nancy) Neuhring, Paul Neuhring, Shirley (Lowell) Lange, Lee Thoma, Russ (Cathy) Thoma, Michael DeMarr, Linda (Chris) Johnstins, and many great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; three brothers, Elery Nuehring, Elliot Neuhring and Alden "Jim" Nuehring; a sister, Eileen DeMarr; two sisters-in-law, Lora (Elery) Nuehring and Dorothea (Elliot) Nuehring; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Thoma.

Eldred was a member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Whistlin' Bit Saddle Club, and Eldred and Joyce both enjoyed going on trailrides with the club. He also liked to watch the television shows "Wheel of Fortune" and the "Lawrence Welk Show".
