Lawrence "Larry" Sheriff, 69, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, passed away Friday, February 15, 2008, at Southern Hills Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, after complications from several illnesses. Memorial services will be provided by Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien later this spring.

Larry was born April 7, 1938, in Dorchester, Iowa, to Forrest & Josephine (Damman) Sheriff. Larry served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 through 1959. The majority of his military service was in the Far East.

He married Joan Slama June 24, 1967, at St. Gabriel's Church in Prairie du Chien. After his military service, Larry worked in bridge construction and manufacturing. In 1970 Larry and Joan opened The Sheriff's Office Bar in Campbellsport, WI. In 1974 Larry and Joan moved to Prairie du Chien, where they owned and operated The Coach Supper Club until 2001, when Larry retired.

Larry enjoyed hunting, being in the outdoors, spending time with family and friends, and wintering in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Larry was a member of many organizations, including The Eagles Club, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Bluff Country Long Spurs, Rocky Mountain Elk Federation, and Crawford County Tavern League.

He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Sheriff; his mother, Josephine Whalen; his stepfather, George Whalen; and his brother-in-law, Ed Loomis.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Prairie du Chien; his daughter, Daureen (Sheriff) Heenan, and son-in-law, Scott, of Neenah, Wisconsin; his daughter, Sarah Sheriff, and her fiancé, Brian Ramsey, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; his sister, Marie Loomis, of Lansing, Iowa; his three brothers, Greg Whalen of Kentucky, Ken Raphael of California and David Sheriff of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry was a loving grandfather to Chelsey, Trent, and Christian. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
