Sam Smerud
Sam Smerud, 54, of Fargo, ND, formerly of New Albin and La Crosse, WI, died Saturday, December 29, 2007 at his home in Fargo. A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 5, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery in New Albin. The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing is assisting the family.
Sam was born in LaCrosse, WI February 2, 1953 to Al and Lorna (Darling) Smerud. During his New Albin grade school years he was one of Shookie's boys and his love of baseball carried with him through his high school years at Aquinas High School in LaCrosse, WI. Third base was his spot there and in Legion Ball.
Sam graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at Viterbo College and a Master's Degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Minnesota. He worked for Banner Health Systems of Fargo as a Clinical Informatacist for many years. More recently he worked as an IT Consultant for I.B.M. He married Barbara Wright and welcomed her daughter Stacy to his heart and home. After many years they were divorced. Sam was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed golf, biking, jogging and bird watching. Hours were spent trout fishing with his Dad in all the great Iowa streams. His dogs and cats were special to him. He instilled a love of sports in his children and played hours of catch in the backyard. He was a proud parent at their many games at West Fargo High School.
Sam is survived by his loving companion, Rhonda Golz of Fargo, ND; two children, Sam Smerud of Edina, MN and Jennifer Smerud of Colorado Springs, CO; His parents, Al and Lorna Smerud of La Crosse, WI; three sisters, Trudy Infelise of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan (Carl) Salek of Westby, WI and Jane (Fred) Beseler of LaCrosse, WI.
