Clarence Ernest Hilgerson 1920 - 2002

Funeral services for Clarence Hilgerson were held Monday, January 7, 2002, at 11:00 A. M. in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder, Iowa. The Reverend Marshall Hahn officiated, assisted by the Reverend Steve Litchfield. The organist was Deb Reierson. Special music was provided by members of the family. Burial was in the Sta
vanger Cemetery at rural, Ossian, Iowa. Casket Bearers were Grandsons, including Scott Hilgerson, Alan Hilgerson, Jeremy Hilgerson, Ryan Hilgerson, Jason Martens, Jason Hilgerson, Brandon Hilgerson, Andy Hilgerson. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Ernest Hilgerson, the son of Andrew Hilgerson and Helga (Lervold) Hilgerson, was born January 10, 1920, on the family farm in Fayette County near Clermont, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Postville on Friday, January 4, 2002. He had reached the age of 81 years, 11 months and 24 days.

He was baptized February 7, 1920 and confirmed September 9, 1934, at the Stavanger Lutheran Church. Clarence attended the Paulson School. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

n January 20, 1943, Clarence was married to Bernice Margaret Sampson at Ft. Hancock, New Jersey. To this union four sons were born. Clarence and Bernice farmed in the northeast Iowa area for several years. Clarence also hauled livestock for a time and in September of 1984, they moved to Postville. Over the last 30 years, Clarence and Bernice traveled to many different places in their camper. For the last few years they enjoyed the local campgrounds.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Myron Hilgerson, Henry Hilgerson, and Howard Hilgerson, and two sisters, Gladys Kleppe and Ella Saboe.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice; four sons and their wives, Robert and Ruth Hilgerson of St. Olaf, Iowa; Dean and Alyce Hilgerson of Postville; Roger and Ida Hilgerson of Elgin, Iowa; and Jerry and Deb Hilgerson of Waukon, Iowa.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Scott (Suzy) Hilgerson, Dawn (Rick) Loftsgard, Lyn (Joel) Berg, Wendy (Greg) Larson, Sara (Frank) Kelly, Alan (Lori) Hilgerson, LeAnn (Mike) Foelske, Jason Hilgerson, Jeremy (Heidi) Hilgerson, Jason Martens, Ryan Hilgerson, Brandon Hilgerson, Andy Hilgerson, Lee Hilgerson; 17 great grandchildren, Landon, Reid, and Mara Loftsgard; Emily and Rachel Berg; Austin, Neil and Ben Kelly, Sam, Shana, Theodore, and Tess Hilgerson; Noah and Colby Larson; Alexis Hilgerson; Ellie Foelske; Jenna Hilgerson; one brother, Adrian Helgerson of Auburn, Iowa; four sisters, Arlene (Fritz) Sutter and Edna Peterson, both of West Union, Iowa; Thelma Schwinefus of Ossian, Iowa; and Myrtle Mork of Decorah, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Patricia (Howard) Hilgerson of West Union.

Clarence was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder.
