Charles "Chuck" Intlekofer

Charles F. "Chuck" Intlekofer, 90, of Seattle, WA went to his Lord Friday, November 23, 2007. Chuck was a man of faith and a Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Nov. 29 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Seattle, WA. Burial Service was at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA.

Chuck was born to Mabel and Fridolin Intlekofer May 23, 1917 in Waukon. He received his Civil Engineering degree from Iowa State University in 1940 and went on to work at the Great Northern Railroad. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Lucille "Lu" Bozena Vlasak, at a community dance. He and Lu married June 3, 1944 when Chuck was home on leave from WW II. They were married for 63 loving years.

Chuck volunteered for the Navy in 1943 and became a Naval Officer, serving with the Seabees in Newfoundland and the South Pacific. In all, Chuck served three years during WWII, coming home in 1946. After the war, Chuck went back to work at the Great Northern Railway and he and Lu would live in St. Paul, MN and Minot, ND, and eventually Seattle, WA, where Chuck became Director of Engineering for the Seattle region of the merged railroad, Burlington Northern.

Most importantly, it was after the war that Chuck and Lu started their family and they were blessed with seven children: Barby (John) Casey, Michael (Keiko) Intlekofer, Sue Charles, Ann Cade, Nancy (Lonnie) Plenert, Carla (Ted Turner) Intlekofer, and Terry (Raj Reddi) Intlekofer.

While successful in all he attempted, it was in the role of father that Chuck shined. His children remember his love, his helpfulness, his winning smile and his can-do attitude. Whether funding a car for college or fixing a leaky pipe, Chuck was always there for his children and grandchildren.

Chuck was predeceased by his brothers, Francis and James. Chuck leaves behind his wife, Lu; sisters, Ruth Ann Kelleher and Mary Intlekofer of Cedar Rapids; his seven children; 12 grandchildren (Erin, Matt, Mariko, Koji, Kari, Ryan, Megan, Janine, Griffin, Calli, Ian, and Colin); and two great-grandchildren (Sam and Nathan). He will be greatly missed.

Chuck was a lifelong member of the Engineering Club of Seattle, a Life Member and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and he belonged to the Great Northern Railway Historical Society and the Ballard Historical Society.
