Mary Marcella Walsh Onsager was born February 6, 1914 at the home of her parents, Frank V. and Mary Josephine (Welch) Walsh. She was their youngest child and the only girl, having five older brothers. Mary was baptized at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and attended St. Patrick School through the 10th grade. She then went on to graduate from Waukon High School in 1934. Mary was a proud member of the Class of '34 and was instrumental in organizing several class reunions.
Following her graduation, she became employed at Schultz Brothers Variety Store in Waukon. She began her employment there as a clerk, and after seven years, was promoted to bookkeeper.
Mary Walsh and Edward Onsager were united in marriage September 10, 1951 at St. Patrick Rectory in Waukon. Several months after her marriage, she resigned her position at Schultz Bros., after a total of 14 years of employment, to become a full-time homemaker.
After her family was raised, she resumed work, first in the Laundry Department at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and then as the head of the Laundry Department at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. She held that position until her retirement in 1976.
Mary was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and lived all her life in Waukon until health issues caused her to begin living with her son in Dubuque in January 2000. She enjoyed embroidery, cooking, baking, and sharing recipes, gardening, watching television, reading the papers and cutting out clippings to put in a scrapbook, talking to her friends on the telephone, and discussing with people the happenings in her hometown.
She was a woman of strong faith who prayed daily and had a deep devotion to our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Mary was a wonderful wife, mother and friend, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her son, James E. Onsager, of Dubuque. In addition, two sisters-in-law survive her, Idella Onsager of Decorah and Mary Onsager of Waukon, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Onsager, in 1981; her parents, Frank V. and Mary J. Walsh; and five brothers, Sylvester, Arthur, Leslie, Thomas and Frederick.
Casketbearers are Ralph Welch, Bob Schultze, Jim Schultze, Matthew Teslow, Dean Teslow and Kim Welch.
Memorials may be made in her name to St. Patrick Catholic Church and School in Waukon or to the charity of the donor's choice.
