Hope Adelaide Clark was born March 2, 1910 in Staples, MN in a log cabin that her father had built. She was the daughter of John Allison and Mattie Emma (Shaw) Haining. After graduating from Staples High School, she attended the University of Minnesota and then graduated with a degree in education from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN.

She began teaching school in Castalia, where she met Keith Winters Clark at a church social. The two were married May 29, 1938 in Staples, MN and returned to the Forest Mills area of Allamakee County, where Hope soon became a busy homemaker and mother. After her children were in school, she returned to teaching in Waterville and Dorchester. Later she worked as a nurse's aide at both Dr. Rominger's office and Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She also did bookkeeping for her and Keith's business, Waukon Implement.

Hope was a very active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and participated in various women's organizations. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Hope's special interests included reading, gardening, raising house plants and flowers, crochet, quilting and handiwork. She was an excellent seamstress and when the children were young made many of their clothes. Hope always had a ready smile, and her good sense of humor made her a friend to everyone she met.
