Bernice E. Leas, 99, of Waukon, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 7, 2002, at it 11:00 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick and Rev. Corey Larson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Bernice Elizabeth Leas was born on September 30, 1903, in rural Waukon, the daughter of Charles G. and Louise (Hansmeier) Stock. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ and graduated from Waukon High School in 1922. On September 29, 1926, she married Everett Leas at her parents' home in Waukon. She remained an active member of Zion Church throughout her life, teaching Sunday School for 27 years, teaching Bible School, and serving as leader of mission guild. Bernice enjoyed gardening and crocheting and was an excellent cook and baker. She appreciated the outdoors and in her younger days liked to fish and hunt. Survivors include three nieces, Eileen Olloff, Joyce Siegele, and Jane Hancock, and two nephews, LeRoy and Neal Leas. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett, and a brother Carl. Casket bearers are Lowell Siegele, John Shafer, Rick Larson, Joe Feller, Leon Hansmeier, and Robert Stock.
