Shirley Dahlstrom

Shirley A. Dahlstrom, 72, of Waukon died Friday, August 31, 2007 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a battle with cancer. Memorial services were held Tuesday, September 4 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating.

Shirley Ann Dahlstrom was born March 16, 1935 in Decorah, the daughter of Milford and Elsie (Nesset) Quam. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church, confirmed at Madison Lutheran Church and attended the Ridgeway School.

May 3, 1952 she married Robert John Dahlstrom in McGregor. Shirley considered her time as a homemaker and mother to be the most important, but she did have a number of jobs outside the home. She worked for a time at Northern Engraving in Waukon, was a waitress at Orville's 66 Café for several years, and did babysitting for area families. In 1998 she and Robert moved to Colfax, WA, where they worked maintenance at Marcus Place Apartments until she moved back to Waukon in 2003.

Over the years Shirley accumulated an extensive collection of angels. She also collected Elvis memorabilia and enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, listening to music and visiting with her friends. Since she loved animals, she and Bob always had a pet dog as part of the family.

Survivors include her four children, Paul, Douglas and Russell (Peggy Berg) Dahlstrom and Roxanne (Chuck) Hawkins, all of Waukon; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, June Juve of Escondido, CA, Penny (Larry) Mestad and Nancy (Ronald) Zweibohmer, both of Decorah, and Elsie (Wayne) Lewis of Evansdale, PA; and six brothers, Jim Ellingson of Minnesota Lake, MN, and Carsten (Carol), Milton (Orma), Norman (Maxine), Roger (Louise), Alfred (Debbie), and Dale (Evie) Quam, all of Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert, who died in 2002; a young daughter, Janet; a great-grandson, Braylen; a brother, Roy "Butch" Quam; and an infant sister, Alice.
