BERNARD JOHN WATERS

Bernard John Waters, son of Robert Berten and Mary Ann (McKinley) Waters, was born March 11, 1894 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Postville, Iowa. He died Sunday, May 15, 1994 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville. Iowa. He was 100 years old.

He attended country school near his home. Bernard served briefly in the armed services during World War I. On Nov. 26, 1918 he was married to Edna Marie Hein in St. Peter's Catholic Church at Clermont, Iowa. To this union two children were born. They farmed in Grand Meadow township until 1948, when they moved to Postville. Bernard loved to go fishing with his family and friends, and he was well known for his carpentry and woodworking ability. Bernard was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville.

He is preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, Edna, who died Sept. 28, 1987, four brothers, Clement, Ambrose, Leonard and Louis, two sisters, Mrs. Marie Leui and Mrs. Helen Kneeland and a sister-in-law, Bernice (Mrs. Clement) Waters. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Neva (John) Jaster of Ossian, and a son Eugene Waters of McGregor; five grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Waters and his wife, Kathryn and Bertie Waters and his wife, Mabel, all of Postville; and three sisters-in-law, Hazel (Mrs. Ambrose) Waters of Postville, Milda (Mrs. Leonard) Waters of Highland, Ind., Fanetta (Mrs. Louis) Waters of Carol Springs, Fla.

A funeral mass was held Tuesday, May 17, 1994, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bridget Catholic Church. The Rev. Roger L. Katz was the presider, assisted by the Rev. Richard Kihn of Ossian. Special music was provided by St. Bridget's Choir, accompanied by Carol Katsumes. At the back of the church, the pall was placed on the casket by Bernard's daughter, Mrs. Neva Jaster and son, Eugene Waters. The lector was Robert Zwirlein. Mass servers were Chad Jaster, Christ Zwirlein and Jason Lechtenberg. Honorary casket bearers were Everett Cook, Noel Cook, William Anderson; and Gary Lenth. Casket bearers were Peter Pape, Jack Jaster, David Waters, Daryl Waters, Cliff J. Olson, Alvin Erickson, Alden (Jim) Nuehring and Duane Thompson. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
