Bernelle Selma (Hill) Decker was born August 10, 1934 on a farm in the Glenwood area of rural Decorah. Her parents were George and Carrie (Bolson) Hill. She was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church and attended the area rural schools as well as Waukon High School. Following her schooling, Bernelle worked as a waitress at the S&D Cafe in Waukon.
October 27, 1951 she married Elmer Dean Decker at the St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage in Waukon. After spending several years as a stay-at-home mother and homemaker, she took a job with Federated Industries in Waukon in 1964. Not long after that she started working for Northern Engraving in Waukon, a career that spanned 34 years, until her retirement in 2003.
From 1968 until 1992, Bernelle and Dean lived on a farm in Ludlow Township where she enjoyed raising a big vegetable garden and growing flowers. She was formerly an active member of WELCA at St. John's Lutheran Church, enjoyed bowling in both a women's and mixed league, and had many good times with their couple's card club. An accomplished seamstress, she sewed clothing as well as numerous craft items and also liked working with ceramics. Throughout her life she made her home a welcome stop for all the members of her extended family and more recently had very much enjoyed the times she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her four children, Debbie (Butch) Mettille of North Pole, AK, and Gayle (Carol), Scott (Pam) and Gregg (Sharilyn) Decker, all of Waukon; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Erickson of Decorah; a sister-in-law, Betty Hill of Waukon; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dean, who died in 2005; and two brothers, Howard and Tilman Hill.
