Emma Anderson

Emma G. Anderson, 88, of Waukon died Sunday, July 15, 2007 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 18 at 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be in West Paint Creek Synod Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Emma Geneva Anderson was born October 13, 1918 in the Highland Prairie area of rural Peterson, MN. Her parents were Ole and Caroline (Larson) Engrav. She was baptized and confirmed at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church and attended the rural Sandsness School. Following school she helped on the home farm and did housekeeping work for other families and relatives.

November 12, 1936 she married Melvin Anderson at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church. They returned to rural Waterville, where they farmed in Paint Creek Township. Emma milked the cows and they raised beef cattle, hogs, chickens, sheep and grain until 1978 when they retired and moved to Waukon.

Emma was a member of Ladies Aid and choir at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church and of Ladies Circle at St. John's Lutheran Church. She was also a member of a neighborhood homemakers club and several card clubs. She cared a great deal about people and spent a lot of time caring for a number of family members and good friends when they were sick. Some of her hobbies included cake decorating, hunting fox and coon, playing cards, attending community events and visiting with her many friends.

Survivors include her husband Melvin of Waukon; two children, Margaret (Harlan) Hermeier of Waukon and Melvin D. (Lynne) Anderson of Waverly; five grandchildren, Lee (Dannette) Hermeier, Lori (Arnie) Crum, Lisa Hermeier, Brian Anderson and Chris (Shelley) Anderson; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael Schulte, Ryan and Eric Crum, Mason, Ella and Walker Hermeier, and Annabel Turnbull.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Steven Paul Hermeier; five sisters, Cora Christensen, Edna Moe, Marie Helgemoe, Esther Jahr and Irene Bakkum; and eight brothers, Lloyd, Clarence, Forest, Henry, Halvor, Leonard, Lawrence, and an infant brother Henry Engrav.

Honorary casketbearers are Dennis and Barb Nebendahl, Jim and Shirley Winke, Ann Bakkum, Muriel Bakkum, Marlys Leiran, Loretta Sorum, Norman Leiran, Dave and Mary Lou Sorum, Emmet and Coila Nolting, Gordon and Donna Gilbertson, Richard and Joan Leiran, Earl and Vivian Iverson, Mike and Diane Quillin, Ralph and Mildred Osterholz, Otto and Eleanor Thorstenson, Robert and Eunice Kolsrud, Gladwin and Darlene Anderson, Norman and Ione Rema, Jim and Kay Christensen, and Henrietta Engrav. Casketbearers are Bob Brandt, Jim Schmidt, Brian Anderson, Chris Anderson, Lee Hermeier, Arnie Crum, Dick Engrav and Carlton Christianson.
