Section Foreman Killed.
John Markwardt, of Harpers Ferry, section foreman on the Waukon branch out of Waukon Junction met an untimely fate early last Friday morning. He was on his way to work as usual, riding down from Harpers Ferry on a private motor car and just before reaching the siding at Waukon Junction met and collided with the Branch passenger train east bound. The section hand riding with him jumped and saved himself but Mr. Markwardt forgot himself momentarily and thought he could make the switch and was hurled from the track and his head fatally crushed. He never regained consciousness dying about 5 the same afternoon. The Motorcar was totally demolished.
The branch passenger took the body to the Clark Hospital at McGregor but nothing could be done.
Mr. Markwardt was aged about 60 years. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Leo Brazell, besides three brothers, Fred and Joe of Lansing and Albert of Bismarck, N.D. also several half brothers and sisters.
He was a man of fine morals, a fond husband, loving father, kind neighbor and true Christian. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at Paint Rock Church, Father Nolan paying a fine tribute to the deceased, and interment in the cemetery adjoining.

Notes from submitter:
In this same paper in the Harpers Ferry news section it mentions that the obituary will appear in the next issue. On January 3, 1923 the obituary is in the paper but on the microfilm the outer edge of the column is missing. Important things I can find in the obituary to add to the above:
– John Markwardt’s wife was Mary Delaney Markwardt & they were united in marriage in Wexford, November 22, 1892.
- His daughter Mrs. Leo Brazell; her name was Mabel
-Frank LaTronche was the co-worker who escaped injury in this accident.
-John Markwardt was born in Lafayette Township in May 1962 and moved to Harpers about 30 years prior to his death.
-The obit. mentions many siblings/step siblings but parts of their names aren’t clear. What I can make out in addition to the brothers named above are (Sh)erman Steiber of Lansing; Mrs. C. (??)gemeir of Ware, Texas; Mrs. Otto (??)gemeir and Mrs. Wm Marks both of Sterling, Colo., and Mrs Gaunitz of Lansing.
-The funeral was Sunday morning Dec. 24th at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry
-Internment was at St. Joseph’s Paint Rock Cemetery. Pall bearers were N. Barbars, Geo. (?)ard, Robt. Mullally, T.W. Melaven, Tom Calvey and J.J. Rellihan.
