Sylvia Hogan-Hegy, age 89, of Lansing died Sunday morning, May 6, 2007 at her home in Lansing. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10 at United Methodist Church in Lansing, with Pastor Keith Putney officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing. Friends may call Wednesday, May 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing. Waukon Standard, May 9, 2007

Sylvia Hogan-Hegy, age 89, of Lansing died Sunday morning, May 6, 2007 at her home in Lansing. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 10 at United Methodist Church in Lansing, with Pastor Keith Putney officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing.

Sylvia Margaret Pottratz Hogan Hegy was born March 24, 1918 to August and Alvina (Klinski) Pottratz in Wilmington, MN. She grew up in New Albin and Lansing, graduating from Lansing High School in 1936.

Sylvia started her teaching career out of high school in Hesper in 1936, teaching all eight grades. She married Marlan Hogan January 3, 1939 in Milwaukee, WI. Sylvia and Marlan had two children, Marlene Finn and Michael Hogan. Marlan passed away December 11, 1971.

She resumed her teaching career in 1952, instructing all eight grades in the country school system. After attending summer school as well as night school for many years while raising a family and teaching school, Sylvia graduated from Upper Iowa University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in August of 1969. She began teaching Special Education in Lansing in 1963 until her retirement in 1980.

She married Laurel Hegy February 9, 1974 and lived in Lansing. Laurel was employed by the Corps of Engineers, working the lock and dam at Lynxville, WI on the Mississippi River until his retirement in 1979. They spent their retirement traveling and enjoying their children and grandchildren.

Left to mourn is her husband, Laurel Hegy; her daughter, Marlene "Marty" (late Dr. William) Finn; her son, Michael (Diane) Hogan; her brother, Milton (Nadine) Pottratz; grandchildren Kelli (Alvaro) Finn-Ramirez, Michael (Beth) Finn, Dr. Matthew (Dr. Liliana) Hogan, Sarah (Jeff) Edwards, and Lisa (Garrett) Scanlan; great-grandchildren Kathryn and Matthew Finn, and Jude Edwards; step-children Lynn (Diane) Hegy, JoAnn (Charles) Rayburn, and Paula (Douglas) Duenkel; step-grandchildren Richard (Rhonda) Rayburn, Dean Rayburn, Joe Hegy and Jason Hegy; and step-great-grandchildren Kelsay, Kayla, and Kensi Edwards, Kaitlyn and Brock Rayburn, and Marissa, Alix, Kinsey and Tyler Hegy.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her sisters, Verona Clancy, Serene Voelker, Lillian Welper, and Mabel Bailey-Graeber; two brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Pottratz; and her son-in-law, Dr. William Finn.
