Mary E. Schwartzhoff, 100, of 1030 Memorial Dr. SE, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Living Center West after a brief illness. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by the Rev. Nils Hernandez. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Survivors include three daughters, E. Gary (John) Wilson of Celina, Ohio, Molly (Jack) Bredl of Cedar Rapids and Kathryn Gregor of Cedar Rapids; a son, Jim (Mary Lou) Schwartzhoff of Kettering, Ohio; a sister, Charlene Jones of Oelwein; a sister-in-law, Anna Helming of La Crescent, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1995; and a son, Gerald on Oct. 22, 1999.
Mary was born Jan. 26, 1907, in Ludlow, Iowa, the daughter of Charles E. and Elizabeth Byrnes Regan. After high school, Mary taught in a ``country'' school for two years. She then went to St. Francis School of Nursing in LaCrosse, Wis., where she graduated as a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for many years and retired from St. Luke's Hospital in 1972. Mary married Harold Schwartzhoff on Dec. 26, 1932, in Waukon. He died Dec. 11, 1995. Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 63 years and a member of The Catholic Daughters of America and St. Theresa Circle.
Mary will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her church, her phenomenal memory, her generosity and hospitality, her needlework, card playing and the grand time she had in January at her 100th birthday party, where 124 of her family and close friends celebrated her century of life.
Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or to donor's choice
