Dorothy Ann Manderscheid was born January 5, 1913, on the rural Lansing farm of her parents, Peter W. and Annastasia. (Waldron) Manderscheid. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1930 and, subsequently, from Waukon Jr. College, where she majored in business. For a period in the 1930s, she was associated with the Elmer Pieper Law Office in Waukon. On July 14, 1942, she married Martin J. Hayes at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. In the 1940s, they operated the Soda Grill Restaurant in Waukon. From 1950 to 1980, Dorothy and Martin were owners of the B&B Store in Waukon, and a second B&B Store in Decorah. Martin died on January 15, 1980. The couple traveled every year to Sarasota, Fla., where they would spend the coldest months of the Iowa winter. Dorothy was active in social affairs at St. Patrick's Church, at the Waukon Golf Club, at the Vets Club, and in Sarasota activities. Both she and Martin were known widely throughout northeast Iowa. Dorothy was well respected and liked in the Waukon community and she had many close friends there. She was also loved by her family throughout the United States. For the past four years, she resided at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, where she made many new friends.
