Selma Wahls

Funeral services for Mrs. Selma Wahls were held Tuesday, December 29, 1998, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend T. M. Marks officiated. Joann Martins was the organist and accompanied the soloist, Kim Schutte. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Selma Ann Wahls, the daughter of Chris and Mary Jane (Fischer) Blum, was born November 17, 1907, in Grant County, near Cassville, Wisconsin. She passed away Saturday, December 26, 1998, in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 91 years, one month and 17 days.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Farmersburg, Iowa. Selma attended the rural Muddy Hollow School near her home. The school has since been moved to the site of the historic Stonefield Village at Cassville, Wisconsin.

On April 20, 1927 Selma was married to Clarence Ernest Wahls at Elkader, Iowa, by the Reverend C. H. Franke. The couple lived on farms near Farmersburg, Monona, Castalia, and Postville. In 1948 they moved to the town of Postville. Clarence died June 29, 1971. Selma worked at the Hi-Way Lanes bowling alley in Postville from 1958 to 1968 where she baked pies, cakes, cookies and rolls.

Selma spent much of her time in her yard taking care of her flowers and garden, including her much loved roses. She also enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several clubs. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on June 20, 1995.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, a foster son, Laraldo Wahls and his wife, Geneva, one brother, Sam Blum, and two sisters, Emma Lau and Marie Schaefer.

Surviving are three grandchildren, Allen Wahls and wife, Ellen, of Postville, LuAnn and husband, Harold Muller, of St. Paul, MN, Donna and husband, Nile Zieman, of Luana, IA; eight great grandchildren, Timothy, Kimberly, Susan, Sara and Samantha and Charmion, Sherman and Lanny, and one great great grandchild, Rory Foster.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of ELCA.

Casket bearers were Loren Eberling, Willard Miene, Earl Koenig, Kenneth Meyer, Dale Anderson and Paul Miene.
