Dennis Winke

Dennis F. Winke, 58, of Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with the Reverend Larry Gander officiating. Burial , with military graveside rites, followed in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Dennis Fredrick Winkie was born April 16, 1943, in Decorah, the son of Rueben F. and Viola (Duvel) Winkie. He attended Ludlow #5 rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1961. In November 1964, Dennis married Mary Bittner at Rockford, IL.

From 1964 until 1966, Dennis served as a heavy vehicle driver in the U.S. Army. He saw much of his duty in Alaska. Following the service, he returned to Cedar Rapids, where he worked as a carpenter for Cedar Rapids Lumber for many years. He spent a short time each in Texas, Arizona, and California, before returning to Marion in 1993. Dennis was working for ReVosWell Construction in Marion.

Dennis was an all around handiman and enjoyed fixing things around his house, as well as for other family members and friends. He liked to grill outside, play with his dog Molly, and follow the Dallas Cowboys. He was a hard worker and a kind, caring, and patient man.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother, Viola Winkie, of Waukon; three daughters, Denise Wilmoth and her children, Kaitlin, Mackenzie, and Greyson Dolezal, and a grandson due in February; Danette (Mike) Madison and their children, Delaney and Miranda; and Danelle (Roger) Carney and their children, Nicholas, Emily, Alison and Nathan; his best friend for life, Mary Pierce; Mary's son, Jason, and Mary's mother, Bessie Bittner, all of Marion; a brother, Gary (Marlene) Winkie of Rockford, IL; five nieces and one nephew.

Casketbearers were Virgil Duvel, Roger Carney, Mike Madison, Jason Pierce, Doug Winkie and Richard Winke.
