Walter Earl Winke

Walter "Jake" Winke, 86, of Waukon, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Rev. Larry Gander officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Walter Earl Winke was born on August 21, 1914 in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, IA. His parents were William and Lydia (Meier) Winke. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church and attended Ludlow #2 rural school. On October 14, 1943, he married Helen Gilbertson at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waukon. Walter farmed most of his life in Ludlow Township. He had a cream route when he was young and later built a herd of registered guernsey dairy cattle.

Since 1983 he has lived in Waukon. He was a life long member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church where he held numerous offices. He was also a member of state and national Guernsey Association, Allamakee County Farm Bureau, a lifetime member of the Allamakee County Fair Society, and a former board member of the Ludlow Creamery. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, but was particularly fond of baseball. He also did woodworking and enjoyed gardening, bowling, and playing cards, as well as following his children and grandchildren in their activities.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, 3 brothers, Elmer and George Winke and Emmet Winkie, and his sister Clara Kugel as well as an infant sister. Survivors include 3 daughters, Nancy (Robert) Nenovich of Plymouth, MN, Ann (Phil) Stone of Waukon, and Barb (Bob) Grahlman of Postville; a son, Kenneth (Debbie) Winke of Waukon; 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Ludeking of Waukon.

Honorary casketbearers were Stacy Stone, Shari Lubahn, Casey Winke, Brandi Grahlman, Kris Nenovich, Harry Adams, Kris Stone, Jan Winke and Missy Nenovich. Casketbearers were Tom and Mark Nenovich, Steve Stone, Chad Winke, Brian Grahlman, and Troy Lubahn.
