Mae Esther Wetherbee

Funeral services for Mae Wetherbee were held Friday, May 28, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated. Beverly Bacon was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in God's Acre Cemetery at Clermont, Iowa.

Mae Esther Wetherbee, the daughter of Lars Paulson and Halvorine "Lena" (Nordhus) Paulson, was born February 11, 1910, at the family farm west of Clermont, Iowa. She died Tuesday afternoon, May 25, 1999, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 89 years, three months and 14 days.

She attended the rural school near her home. On December 24, 1938 she was married to Thomas J. Wetherbee at West Union, Iowa. They lived on a farm west of Hawkeye, Iowa for nine years. In the spring of 1948 they moved to the farm northeast of Postville in Post Township, Allamakee County. They retired from active farming in 1974. Mae had moved to an apartment in Postville in 1997. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center December 13, 1998.

Mae loved the outdoors and often went mushroom hunting and picked up hickory nuts and walnuts in the fall. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting and made many beautiful items. Mae like to play cards and spent many hours with her friends. She also belonged to a Wednesday afternoon pinochle club, a Wednesday night euchre club and a Thursday afternoon canasta club.

She is survived by her twin sister, Esther Mae Griebenow, of Postville, Iowa and a sister, Pearl Amanda Huegli of West Union, Iowa, a sister-in-law, Margaret Paulson of Yakima, Washington, nephews William Burrow of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert Burrow of Clermont, Iowa, Dennis Griebenow of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and William Paulson of Seattle, Washington, a niece, Lana and her husband, Rod Hespen of Syracuse, Nebraska and many friends.

Mae is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Tom, who died October 26, 1979, 3 sisters, Mabel Burrow, Clara Kinsel, Helen Stune, two brothers, William Paulson and Alert Paulson, brothers-in-law, Richard Griebenow, Emil Huegli, William Burrow and Frank Stune and a sister-in-law, Gladys Paulson.

Casket bearers were Keith and Dorothy Roffman, David and Carolyn Smith and Mark and Gail Zweibohmer. Honorary casket bearers were Roger Engelhardt, Cloy Kuhse, Virgil Martins, Mark Zieman and Dan "Sam" Bacon.
